Sulfur & Rotten-Egg Smell Removal in Brevard County, FL

The rotten-egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas or sulfur bacteria. The Florida Department of Health says it can occur in wells anywhere in Florida. A water softener won't remove it.

DOH's checklist helps find the source. Smell only from hot water: likely the water heater. Smell only in water that went through the softener: likely sulfur bacteria in the softener. Strong at first, then fading: likely bacteria in the well or plumbing. Strong and steady: hydrogen sulfide in the groundwater itself.

Fixes for groundwater sulfur are aeration, oxidation (including air-injection systems) and activated carbon. Published Florida ranges put a typical air-injection system at about $1,500 to $2,500 installed. A water heater or well-bacteria problem calls for a different (and sometimes cheaper) fix, which is why we diagnose first.
