Mims water in short

Mims's county water comes from ten shallow surficial aquifer wells and is aerated to remove iron and dissolved gases before lime softening. Homes on their own wells don't get that treatment, so rotten-egg smell and orange iron stains are common. Test first. Iron and sulfur have to be treated before a softener.

The county's Mims plant shows what local groundwater needs: it aerates water from ten shallow wells to strip out iron and dissolved gases, then lime-softens it and disinfects with chloramine. If you're on that system, a softener sized to your tested hardness and a catalytic carbon filter cover most needs.

If you're on your own well, you're doing that treatment yourself, or living without it. The Florida Department of Health says hydrogen sulfide can occur in wells anywhere in Florida, and iron bacteria cause red stains, slimy toilet tanks and swampy tastes. The fix might be air-injection oxidation, a carbon stage, or chlorine injection for heavy iron bacteria. A softener comes after those, never before.

Test first. A free in-home test shows iron, hardness, pH and smell. A certified lab handles bacteria and nitrate, which DOH-Brevard recommends every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Mims well water stain everything orange?

Iron, sometimes with iron bacteria. Above about 0.3 mg/L, iron stains fixtures and laundry and fouls softener resin, so an iron filter goes in first.

Is the rotten-egg smell in my Mims well dangerous?

The Florida Department of Health says sulfur bacteria aren't harmful and the smell usually doesn't reflect how clean the water is. Still test for coliform bacteria regularly.
