Cocoa's Claude H. Dyal Water Treatment Plant has supplied central Brevard since 1957 and serves about 300,000 people, from Cocoa and Rockledge to Merritt Island, the beaches and Kennedy Space Center. In 2025 it treated about 6.1 billion gallons of groundwater and 1.3 billion gallons of Taylor Creek Reservoir surface water.
Groundwater is softened at the plant with lime and soda ash, so Cocoa's water is only moderately hard at about 6.7 grains per gallon. Chloramine keeps it disinfected across a large, hot distribution system. A few weeks at a time, the city switches to free chlorine to clean the pipes, and many people notice the smell.
If your property runs on a private well instead of city water, the advice changes: test for bacteria and nitrate every year (DOH-Brevard's recommendation) and check for sulfur and iron before buying any equipment.
